Sweet Soul Sister

It seems that it is the 25th anniversary of the compact disc. I come from a family that has more than an impressive collection of albums and 45s, so many that they’ve had to be painstakingly catalogued.

I can’t remember the first album I bought for myself, although it was most assuredly something disco related from K-Tel records purchased at King’s at Presidential Plaza. I can’t even remember the first 45, although that was most assuredly something purchased from Quincy Records & Tapes and probably something bad and 80’s pop-ish.

I can, however, remember my first CD. I had saved up my babysitting money to buy my very own stereo in the summer of 1989. I had my friend’s brother use his employee discount at Lechmere’s and bought a Fisher stereo, complete with a turntable and a cd player. The night I went in to pick it up, I also bought my first cd, The Cult’s Sonic Temple. I still have it. But then again, I can probably get my hands on one of those K-Tel records (or several).

It’s making me feel even older that most of the things I’ve mentioned in this post are gone and/or out of business.

Has it really been 25 years? It seems like only yesterday… *looks longingly at my collection of LPs, Cassettes and 8-Track tapes.*

25 years?? wholly heck….that went quick.
My first album was either the Carpenters or Donny Osmond or maybe even Shaun Cassidy. My last album was Salt n Pepper.
My first cassette was Dire Straights and my last cassette was probably Nirvana or Blind Melon.
I couldnt tell you what my first CD was….I had to buy six of them to use in the new car with the 6 disc changer back in 96. Probably Guns n Roses, ACDC and some others to feel like I was still listening to my music in the new contraption.
I’m still working on replacing all of my albums and cassetts with CD’s. I wouldn’t even want to try the 45’s.
Interesting how you can remember the day….with piggy bank money going through Grants department store to buy your first album. Or from your first job and buying an album that you remember more because it was the last one you bought.
    Thanks for the memories!
Now I feel ancient. (But not as ancient as the guy with the 8 tracks LOL) :*

I still have my first two cds… The Grateful Dead’s Dead Set and the self-titled Violent Femmes from ‘83. Mind you, I got plenty of weird looks when I put those two on the checkout counter.

When I read Cass’s comment and she wrote of her 1st vinyl album my mind shot to my own, and I thought I couldn’t possibly mention it. But a millisecond later when I saw she wrote Shaun Cassidy… well then I confess: Shaun Cassidy “Born Late”. It was a gift from someone – maybe a cousin.

A more fond memory is my 1st CD, given to me by my high school boyfriend: U2 “Unforgettable Fire”. It wasn’t even in the plastic jewel case we all know now – it was in a cardboard case that flipped over on itself twice.

Unfortunately, my first CD collection was stolen in ‘94, taking that precious CD with it.
